Jordan Martinez

Jordan Martinez & The YouthWorks Culinary Program

"Before I started at YouthWorks my life wasn't really going anywhere. I wasn't doing anything. I had no motivation really. YW helped me get really far. They got me my GED and a job. They gave me the motivation to go to college." - Jordan Martinez

The Santa Fe YouthWorks culinary crew is a group of motivated young people who aren't just looking to get paid - they're looking to learn. For one student in particular the program has been a jumping off point to a new and promising career in the food industry.

About Jordan - Jordan Martinez, 19, entered the YW Culinary Arts Training Program in April 2011 after spending several months in YW Alternative Ed program. In May 2011, Jordan completed his GED. Martinez believes YW helped him change the way he sees his own future. Not only was Martinez pushed to go to college, he was pushed to study something that he loved. Martinez, who has been interested in culinary arts since he was seven, is now a full-time college student in the SFCC Culinary Arts Program. He is set to complete his associates next year.

"He was really shy and he didn't speak a whole lot and now he's really come into his own. He brings a lot of life to the kitchen. Students like Jordan really enjoy the more complicated aspects of running a kitchen. The things that take more time and effort - Jordan has really taken those on to become our head chef." - Heather Vigil, YW Culinary Program Coordinator

About The YW Culinary Training Program - In partnership with the Tierra Encantada Charter School (TECS), YW is now running a full scale kitchen serving hot meals to our own crews and more than 150 students and faculty of TECHS & YW. Trainees in the program are given the opportunity pursue their GED while learning concrete job skills in the culinary arts and business management fields. Through their apprenticeship, YW hopes to see students graduate to pursue local careers in the culinary arts and to continue on to college.

Heather Vigil, YW Culinary Program Coordinator, is impressed with the confidence she sees students develop through their participation in the program. Vigil said the program has initiated a massive transformation in the outlook of the culinary students who have taken ownership of the complicated endeavors the kitchen staff embarks on. TECHS Principal Daniel Benavidez sees the program as a model other schools should use to not only ensure the healthiness of food provided to students while having a deeper impact on the community than traditional food service programs.

"The program has been great. The students often remind me of how I promised that we would have better food. We have more students eating now and they only have one complaint - more food or bigger portions."-Daniel Benavidez - Principal of Tierra Encantada Charter High School

YW IS PROUD TO PARTNER WITH THE CITY OF SANTA FE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DIVISION TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES TO YOUNG PEOPLE LIKE JORDAN. YW IS LOOKING FOR LOCAL BUSINESS LEADERS INTERESTED IN HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE LIKE JORDAN TO CONTINUE THEIR PATH TO SUCCESS.

New Pilot Apprenticeship Program

08/09/2011

Introducing exciting new Plumbing and HVAC pre-apprentice pilot program in collaboration with the Santa Fe Community College's Economic and Workforce Development Department.

Santa Fe  Youthworks and the Santa Fe Community College are collaborating to create a unique opportunity for Santa Fe youth interested in obtaining technical training and experience in Plumbing and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) during a semester long certification course at SFCC. In partnership with local employers and professionals, this program aims to provide an innovative, high quality pathway to journeyman level training for local young people.

Beginning in the fall of this year, the program aims to enroll eight young people on full scholarships in the full-time Plumbing or HVAC certification programs at SFCC while also providing paid part-time internships at local businesses and other support and tutoring services.

YouthWorks is seeking potential employers interested in housing one to two interns at their business for up to 3 months. The interns will be paid by the program, at no cost to the employer. Employers will be asked to attend 2 to 3 meetings over the course of the semester.

As partners in this program, participating businesses will be an integral part of all publicity and marketing aspects of the project, and will be included in many opportunities for participation in further opportunities for promotion and recognition of service and commitment to community improvement.

A program launch is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, August 10 at the Santa Fe Community College at 10:30 in Room 820. Official program activities will begin August 22.
